Vivian A. Charneco, M.D.

Founder & CEO. Child, Adolescent and Adult Psychiatrist

Dr. Vivian Charneco is the founder and Medical Director of Mindful Behavioral Healthcare. Dr. Charneco has over 25 years of experience in treating mental health and behavioral conditions. Her initial training in the medical field was in Puerto Rico, where she completed a Bachelor’s degree from the University of Puerto Rico. She completed medical school at the Ponce School of Medicine. Later on, she attended the Thomas Jefferson University Hospital, where she received her psychiatric training and completed a fellowship in Child, Adolescent, and Adult Psychiatry. She also received training in Psychoanalysis at the Philadelphia Psychoanalytic Institute.

Dr. Charneco held different professional roles throughout her career at several setting, both clinical and administrative in nature, where she applied and improved her knowledge in adult, adolescent, and adult psychiatry.

After years of practice in traditional psychiatry, she realized that it was necessary to incorporate a holistic approach in order to integrate mind, body, and spirit. During this quest, she had the opportunity to be trained in Hypnotherapy and Hypnosis techniques by renowned psychiatrist Dr. Brian Weiss, author of the book “Many Lives, Many Masters.”

Dr. Charneco is fully bilingual in English and Spanish and is a member of the American Psychiatric Association, Florida Psychiatric Society, and PanAmerican Medical Association.

Gustavo V. Ruiz, M.D.

Adult Psychiatrist

Dr. Gustavo Ruiz is an innovative bilingual (English-Spanish) psychiatrist with more than 15 years of proven clinical experience evaluating and treating patients with psychiatric and psychological disorders. He has expertise working in mental health institutes, public and private hospitals, primary care centers, and clinics.

Dr. Ruiz studied Medicine at the Puerto Rico Institute of Psychiatry, where he completed his residency in psychiatry. He has in-depth knowledge in treating and managing different age groups such as children, adults, and geriatric patients.

Luis J. Olivera-Rodriguez, M.D.

Board Certified Psychiatrist

Dr. Luis Olivera-Rodriguez is a Board Certified General Psychiatrist with more than 5 years of experience in the treatment of psychiatric and psychological conditions. He completed his Bachelor’s Degree in Science and a Master in Public Health at the Medical Sciences Campus from the University of Puerto Rico. He later obtained his Doctorate Degree in Medicine at the University of Puerto Rico School of Medicine, and a residency in General Psychiatry from that same institution. He is an active member of the American Psychiatric Association and the Florida Psychiatric Society. Dr. Olivera is one of the few psychiatrists trained in the Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation (TMS) program, an innovative treatment modality currently being used to successfully treat patients suffering from Major Depression.  

Dr. Olivera is fully bilingual in English and Spanish and has vast experience attending all populations from different cultural backgrounds, with a special interest in geriatric patients. He likes to integrate all aspects of a patient’s health into his treatment techniques by using pharmacogenetic testing to evaluate which medications are best according to his patients’ conditions. Dr. Olivera is now a proud member of the Mindful Behavioral Healthcare’s professional team.

Jose O. Gonzalez, M.D.


Dr. González is a bilingual (English-Spanish) psychiatrist with over 20 years of experience. After obtaining a Doctorate degree in Medicine, he focused on studying Psychiatry at the Puerto Rico Institute of Psychiatry, Centro Médico in 1996. Most recently, Dr. González completed his Master’s degree in Psychopharmacology from the Neuroscience Education Institute (NEI), California in 2006. After achieving academic success, he gave back to the community by publishing a book titled “Asesinos del Cerebro: Bipolaridad y Depresión”.


Dr. González utilizes scientific knowledge to help others achieve emotional stability, improving their self-esteem and way of life. Mindful Behavioral Healthcare is proud to have him as part of our professional team.

Dr. Miguel Meléndez, M.D.

General Practitioner with Psychiatric Experience in Adults and Certification in Treating Opioid Dependency with the Medication Suboxone

Dr. Miguel Meléndez is a bilingual (English-Spanish) physician with over 15 years of experience in the field of general medicine. He has worked in various settings including emergency rooms, primary care clinics, and psychiatric hospitals. Since 2005, Dr. Melendez provided services at the First Hospital Panamericano in Cidra, Puerto Rico where he gained valuable experience treating patients with psychiatric conditions.

He was a distinguished board member of the Movement for Attaining Independent Living (MAVI) for people with developmental disabilities and lobbied funds in Washington D.C. on behalf of this center. Dr. Miguel is a hard-working, ethical professional who enjoys helping those in need and is now a proud member of Mindful Behavioral Healthcare.

Dr. Nasim David, M.D.

Pediatrician with Mental Health Experience

Dr. Nasim David is a bilingual (English-Spanish) Pediatrician with over 35 years of substantive clinical experience. Dr. Nasim received his Cum Laude Medical Degree from the Universidad Autónoma de Santo Domingo in Dominican Republic, and completed his pediatric residency at the Jose N. Gandara Regional Hospital in Ponce, Puerto Rico. He was Director of the Pediatrics Department at Tricoche Hospital in Ponce, Puerto Rico, professor at the Center for Education and Development of Homeopathy in Puerto Rico and now a proud member of Mindful Behavioral Healthcare.

His primary focus in the area of pediatrics is diagnosis, treatment and prevention of diseases, as well as children’s growth and development. Dr. Nasim’s expertise ranges from programs in Ob-Gyn, surgery, sports, internal medicine and pediatric emergency care. The principle that always guided Dr. David in his years of experience as a pediatrician has been to give the best care to his patients, their families and the community.

Roger Rivera, A.R.N.P.

Advanced Registered Nurse Practitioner

Mr. Rivera has a diverse background in treating different populations. He is originally from Los Angeles, California and has served in the military for six years. Upon exiting, he moved to Puerto Rico to pursue a medical career where he obtained his bachelor’s degree in Nursing at the Inter-American University of Puerto Rico. He then obtained his Family Nurse Practitioner degree from the University of Puerto Rico, where he specialized in surgery.


Mr. Rivera is bilingual (English-Spanish) and he is extremely passionate in his desire and ability to help others. With 11 years of clinical working experience, he is now part of the Mindful Behavioral team and will bring his enthusiasm to serving the Central Florida community.

Beverly Howard, A.R.N.P.

Advanced Registered Nurse Practitioner

Ms. Howard is an Advanced Registered Nurse Practitioner certified by the American Academy of Nurse Practitioners. She studied at South University in Tampa, Florida where she obtained her graduate degree as an advanced practice nurse with specialization in family nurse practice. She has over twenty-years of experience in a variety of settings such as critical care nursing, gerontology, and emergency medical nursing. She is now a proud member of the Mindful Behavioral team.

Ingrid Encinas, A.R.N.P.

Advanced Registered Nurse Practitioner

Ms. Encinas is a bilingual (English-Spanish) Advanced Registered Nurse Practitioner who specializes in family medicine. She obtained her Bachelor of Science in Nursing at Florida International University in Miami, FL. She continued her education and completed her Master of Science in nursing from the University of Miami.

With over 7 years of experience, Ms. Encinas has worked in both outpatient/inpatient settings. She enjoys treating patients of all ages and provide quality care through a balanced approach of traditional and holistic principles. We eagerly welcome Ingrid to the Mindful Behavioral team.


Deborah Rivera, Ph.D., L.M.H.C.

Licensed Mental Health Counselor, Children, Adolescents, & Adults

Dr. Deborah Rivera is a bilingual (English-Spanish) psychotherapist who has over 20 years experience providing therapeutic services in outpatient, inpatient, residential settings and correctional facilities. She has a doctoral degree in General Psychology and a master’s degree in Counseling Psychology.

Dr. Rivera believes in the human potential to deal and overcome psychological conditions.  She has worked with most areas of mental health, and has seen that building trust- a strong rapport, providing support, and teaching the necessary strategies to patients, help them reduce clinical symptoms, maintain emotional stability, function better in general, and achieve their goals in life.

Dr.Rivera’s  dissertations at the doctoral and master levels were about “schizophrenic thought” and “alcoholism”; respectively. Dr. Rivera has vast experience with patients diagnosed with Major Psychiatric Disorders (Schizophrenia, Bipolar Disorders, Major Depressive Disorders), alcoholism, and drug abuse-dependence. She also has extensive clinical experience with children, adolescents and adults diagnosed with Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder.  Her eclectic approach to psychotherapy includes:  psycho education, Insight oriented, supportive, cognitive-behavioral therapy, as well as behavioral strategies according to the needs of the treated population.

Maxi Dillon, L.M.H.C.

Licensed Mental Health Counselor and Qualified Supervisor for Mental Health

Mrs. Dillon is a Licensed Mental Health Counselor with more than eight years of combined experience. She received her Bachelor’s degree in Psychology from the University of South Florida and her Master’s in Counseling with Dual Specialization in Mental Health Counseling and Marriage/Family Therapy from Barry University.

Mrs. Dillon uses a variety of approaches to treat her patients by providing insight-oriented, cognitive behavioral and solution focused therapy. Her treatment modality is focused in guiding her clients in a journey of self-awareness, healing, and personal growth. We are proud to have her as part of our clinical team at Mindful Behavioral Healthcare.

Miriam L. Candelaria, L.M.H.C.

Licensed Mental Health Counselor and Qualified Supervisor for Mental Health

Ms. Candelaria has an enormous wealth of work history and experience, inclusive of but not limited to: mental health counseling, mentoring, paralegal/legal, military, psycho- therapy, group facilitation, clinical therapy, criminal investigation, computer analysis, and even serving as adjunct professor for the Miami-Dade College.

She has worked with children, adolescents, adults, families, couples/divorce, immigrants, geriatrics, victims/aggressors of domestic violence, addicts and multicultural populations across the state of Florida. She is extremely passionate about placing her patients first by using a variety of clinical and behavioral techniques. She trusts in her patients’ inherent strengths and abilities to help them become aware of their conditions and search for the proper treatment solution. Her desire to serve has led her to Mindful Behavioral Healthcare to continue applying her knowledge in the mental health area.

Jerry Summerfield, L.M.H.C.

Licensed Mental Health Counselor and Qualified Supervisor for Mental Health

Jerry Summerfield, M.ED, LMHC has been providing mental health and substance abuse counseling services since 2010. Jerry graduated with his Masters in Education in 2012, with an emphasis in Counseling and Human Services- Mental Health Counseling. He is a Licensed Mental Health Counselor by the State of Florida, a National Certified Counselor by the National Board for Certified Counselors and is also a Certified Case Manager from the Commission for Case Manager Certification.

Jerry is passionate about helping individuals who need to make changes to deal with life on life’s terms. During his counseling career he has worked with homeless veterans, children and families, foster families, adolescents in the juvenile probation system, and men and women with substance abuse issues.

Jerry works from a client centered, trauma informed, and needs based holistic philosophy. He holds certifications in the trauma treatments of EMDR and TF-CBT. His specializations include: trauma in children and adults, childhood attachment issues, mood and anxiety disorders (Depression, Bi-polar, Anxiety, PTSD), LGBT+ issues, men’s issues, and substance abuse and co-occurring diagnosis. With children, he utilizes art and play therapy to help the child to learn new skills, learn how to effectively express themselves, and develop healthy social interaction.

Rachel Banner, L.M.H.C.

Licensed Mental Health Counselor

Ms. Banner is a Board Certified Licensed Mental Health Counselor who obtained her Master’s degree in Counseling from Barry University. She has experience working in a variety of healthcare settings, from inpatient facilities to private practices. Her focus is on adults struggling with substance abuse, men and women in crisis, and families dealing with various mental health issues, specifically anxiety and depression.

Ms. Banner is passionate about helping others to find peace within themselves and their relationships, so they can have happier and healthier lifestyles. Her treatment modality is client-centered through a practical approach that utilizes Cognitive Behavioral Therapy and Solution Focused techniques. These allow for her clients to transform their thinking and behavioral patterns, and ultimately changing their lives.

Ms. Banner’s education, training and experience have helped to provide her with a holistic view of the mental health field, lending a unique perspective to her counseling style. We welcome her to the Mindful Behavioral Team!

Cheryl Charles-Ortiz, L.M.H.C.

Licensed Mental Health Counselor

Ms. Charles is a bilingual (English-Spanish) Licensed Mental Health Counselor and a Qualified Supervisor for Mental Health and Marriage & Family Interns, with over 10 years of experience providing counseling services in community mental health facilities, outpatient clinics and psychiatric hospitals. She obtained her Bachelor’s degree in Psychology from the University of Puerto Rico and a Law Degree from the Interamerican University in Puerto Rico. She completed a dual graduate degree in Mental Health and Family, Couples and Marriage Counseling from Barry University.


Ms. Charles’ treatment approach is from a Client Centered and Trauma Informed perspective. She believes the past don’t have to define the future but could be a stepping-stone from where a better future could be started. She also specializes in working with families from different ethnical backgrounds using Cognitive Behavioral Therapy and Bowenian Transgenerational System Theory, which are modalities that assist in understanding the role that culture and ethnicity play in a family’s overall function. Rosa Beltré, L.C.S.W.

Phychoterapist, Children, Adolescents & Adults

Rosa Beltre is a bilingual Licensed Clinical Social Worker and psychotherapist with over 20 years of experience providing mental health services in residential, outpatient, inpatient and crisis unit services to adults and children in New York and Florida. She has a bachelor’s degree from Queens College in Psychology and Women Studies as well as a Master’s degree from Hunter College School of Social Work with a Concentration in Case and Group Work. Ms. Beltre is also an Acupuncture Detox Specialist with extensive experience in the area of addiction and a registered hypnotherapist. She has provided social services and missionary work in Latin America, West Africa and Ghana.

Ms. Beltre uses an eclectic approach to treat her patients by providing insight oriented, cognitive behavioral and psycho-dynamic therapy. She is also passionate about working with patients suffering from severe and persistent conditions such as Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder, by treating each case as a unique one as a way of helping each individual accomplish their maximum potential during their therapeutic process.

Brenda Santos, L.C.S.W.

​Mrs.Santos is a fully bilingual (English/Spanish)​ Licensed Clinical Social Worker who earned her Master’s Degree from Universidad Interamericana de Puerto Rico. She has over 16 years of experience providing clinical ​services in hospices, hospitals, nursing homes and community programs.​

Her areas of interest include end of life, hospice care, caregiver support,​ as well as Neuro-degenerative and Neuro cognitive therapy. S​he specializes in providing counseling services ​to patients suffering from depression,​ anxiety and ​other emotional disorders through an eclectic treatment ​approach using cognitive behavioral, psycho-dynamic and psycho-education therapies.  In this way,​ the ​client and counselor journey together to find the tools that will allow for growth and wellness.

Patrick Crews, L.C.S.W.

Licensed Clinical Social Worker

Mr. Crews is a Licensed Clinical Social Worker who earned his Master’s degree in Clinical Social Work from Barry University in Miami, Florida. He also studied at University of Central Florida where he obtained his undergraduate degree in Psychology. He has been actively working with children, adolescents and adults who are suffering from anger, depression, and anxiety. Mr. Crews also helps individuals who are experiencing life transitions and, as such, he is committed to serving the LGBTQ community and their families. He enjoys working with children and their parents, learning to navigate Oppositional Defiance issues as well as Attention Deficit Disorders.

Mr. Crews believes that at the core of every person there is a whole and perfect individual striving to reach their full potential. Through his compassionate use of Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, Motivational Interviewing and Narrative Therapy, his clients can gain insight and learn new coping skills that allows them to overcome reach their full potential.

Yesenia Diaz, M.A.

Registered Mental Health Counselor Intern

Mrs. Diaz is a bilingual (English-Spanish) mental health counselor with over 15 years of experience in the mental health industry. She obtained her Bachelor’s degree in Psychology from the University of Puerto Rico and a Master’s in Psychology Counseling from the Interamerican University of Puerto Rico.

Throughout her career, she has worked with a variety of demographics including children, adolescents, adults, families, couples in various outpatient and inpatient settings.

Her psychotherapy approach includes; insight oriented psychoeducation, supportive cognitive behavioral therapy, and behavioral strategies. She believes in the importance of a guidance process during challenging stages of life and having an accessible means to impact quality of life for everyone.
